We multiply length × width for the ceiling area, multiply by coats, and divide by about 350 sq ft per gallon — typical for flat ceiling paint on a smooth, primed surface.
What changes how much you need
- Two coats is standard, especially over patched drywall or when changing color.
- Textured or popcorn ceilings drink far more — figure about 250–300 sq ft per gallon.
- Flat (matte) sheen hides imperfections better than anything glossier.

How much paint for a 12×12 ceiling?
About 1 gallon for two coats: 144 sq ft × 2 ÷ 350 ≈ 0.8 gallon, rounded up.
How much paint for a 10×10 ceiling?
One gallon covers it comfortably — 100 sq ft at two coats is 200 sq ft of coverage, well inside a gallon’s 350 sq ft. Buy a single gallon unless the ceiling is textured or unprimed.
How much ceiling paint for 200 square feet?
Roughly 1.2 gallons at two coats (200 × 2 ÷ 350), so buy 2 gallons and expect to have some left. At one coat a single gallon is enough.
How many coats does a ceiling need?
Usually two for an even finish, particularly over repairs or a color change. One can do for a like-for-like refresh.
Why does a popcorn ceiling use more paint?
The texture adds surface area and soaks up paint, dropping coverage to roughly 250–300 sq ft per gallon.
Do I need to prime a ceiling before painting?
Prime new drywall, any patched areas, and water stains — bare drywall and joint compound absorb paint at very different rates, so skipping primer shows up as a patchy flash even after two coats. An existing painted ceiling in sound condition does not need priming.
Can I use wall paint on a ceiling?
It works, but dedicated ceiling paint is formulated thicker to cut down on spatter and is almost always flat, which hides the imperfections that overhead lighting exaggerates. If you do use wall paint, choose flat and expect more drips.
