Deck Stain Calculator — How Much Stain Do I Need?

Enter your deck or fence area and the number of coats to estimate gallons of stain. Wood drinks up the first coat, so coverage is lower than wall paint.

How this calculator works

We multiply length × width for area, multiply by coats, and divide by about 200 sq ft per gallon — typical for deck stain on smooth wood. Rough or thirsty wood covers less.

What changes how much you need

  • Bare, weathered, or rough wood soaks up far more — figure 150 sq ft/gal or less on the first coat.
  • Don’t forget railings, balusters, and stairs — they add a surprising amount of area.
  • Most semi-transparent stains want one thorough coat; overapplying causes peeling.
  • Stain when wood is dry with no rain expected for 24–48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a gallon of deck stain cover?

About 200–300 sq ft per coat on smooth wood, dropping to 150 or less on rough or weathered boards.

How many coats of stain does a deck need?

Usually one good coat for semi-transparent stains. Follow the can — extra coats can peel.

Do I include railings in the area?

Yes. Railings, spindles, and stairs can add 30–50% more surface than the deck floor alone.
