Enter the size of your bed and how deep you want the mulch to estimate cubic yards and the number of standard 2-cubic-foot bags to buy.

How this calculator works

We compute bed volume (length × width × depth), convert to cubic yards, and divide the cubic feet by 2 to count standard bags. Buying by the yard gets much cheaper once you pass about 10–12 bags.

What changes how much you need

  • 2–3 inches is ideal for most beds; 3–4 inches suppresses weeds better — but never pile mulch against stems or trunks.
  • One cubic yard ≈ 13–14 standard 2-cubic-foot bags.
  • Bulk (by-the-yard) mulch usually runs 40–60% cheaper than bagged for large areas.
  • Refresh mulch yearly; it breaks down and fades.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a yard?

About 13.5, since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and standard bags hold 2 cubic feet each.

How deep should mulch be?

2–3 inches for most beds. Going past 4 inches can suffocate roots and waste material.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?

Usually yes. Once you need more than about 10–12 bags, ordering by the cubic yard is significantly cheaper even after delivery.
